Storied ArtSchool begins semester

When students walk into the first classes of the ArtSchool’s spring semester next week, they may not realize the history they are about to be a part of.

The school is the teaching branch of the ArtsCenter and holds classes in several kinds of arts, including painting and dancing.

“There’s something there that would appeal to anybody in the community interested in taking classes in the arts,” said John Wilner, executive director of the ArtsCenter.

Students create original dramas in 48 hours

ArtsCenter expands Irish celebration

For Tess Mangum Ocaña, concert and facilities director of the ArtsCenter, one day a year is not enough to celebrate Celtic and Irish culture.

Because of this she has expanded the usual St. Patrick’s Day show into the center’s first Celtic concert series.

Century Center hosts ‘Unexpected’ art

Though art is never unexpected in Carrboro, an exhibit on display in the Century Center has been given just that title.

“The Unexpected Interlude,” a series of paintings by Chapel Hill resident Eileen Neacy, will be on display until the end of February.

Shelves in the glaze-mixing room hold recycled baby food jars with masking tape labels. For the last five years, The Clay Centre has been a refuge for artistic expression and therapy.

Studios shape youth music scene

Carrboro Music Studios offer lessons for a wide range of instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, violin and vocals.
Ten years ago Chris Seagle opened the studio on Main Street. In 2005 he added another location on Greensboro Street to meet the growing demand for music programs.

Carrboro continued the five-year tradition of the Second Friday Art Walk on Friday, January 12. The monthly event invites residents and visitors alike to view a large variety of artwork. The eighteen separate locations, ranging from University Mall to West Main Street, offer debut and veteran artists a chance to display and sell their work.

ArtsCenter digs up roots

The roots of American music have once again tapped into the Carrboro music scene.

The ArtsCenter’s Fourth Annual American Roots Series kicked off Jan. 5 with a performance by Chris Hellman, a former member of The Byrds, with his longtime collaborator Herb Peterson.
The series features 24 performances and runs through June 30.
